Baby girl survives crash as mother dies
Tragedy struck at lunchtime yesterday when the baby and her mum were travelling on the Graiguenamanagh to Goresbridge road in Co Kilkenny. Their car hit a truck coming in the opposite direction at Mountloftus. Gardaí and ambulance services rushed to the scene.
The woman was pronounced dead a short time later at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny city. She is from Gowran.
Her name was not being released until all her family were informed of the tragedy.
Gardaí in Graiguenamanagh are investigating the accident. They said the truck driver was uninjured but was in severe shock.
The baby girl, who was strapped in a car seat, also appeared to be uninjured in the smash.
The incident occurred during a wet spell on a long bend on the country road.
Gardaí have appealed to witnesses to the incident to contact them on (0503) 24222.
