BRITAIN has been ordered to account for more than a tonne of radioactive waste being stored at Sellafield to ensure none of it falls into the wrong hands.

For several years, inspectors from Euratom, the EU nuclear energy inspectorate has been unable to gain access to a pond at Sellafield, called B30, that stores irradiated fuel because of high radiation levels and poor visibility.

Now the European Commission has given the British Government until June 1 to produce a plan that will allow inspectors to find out what is in the area.
