€1.7m cannabis haul in Carlow
Gardaí in Carlow Town recovered the drugs in a swoop on a rented apartment in the Graiguecullen area of the town at around 9.45pm on Tuesday night.
It followed a seizure of €40,000 worth of cannabis resin in North Dublin at 8pm on Tuesday night.
Detectives in Carlow made the bust following a surveillance operation.
A number of uniformed and plainclothes detectives called to the apartment as part of their ongoing inquiries into drug trafficking in the greater Leinster area.
No arrests were made, but gardaí are following a number of leads in the case.
The cache comprised of cannabis resin blocks and was taken to Carlow Garda Station overnight.
It was transferred yesterday to the Garda Technical Bureau at Garda headquarters in Phoenix Park for detailed forensic examination.
Gardaí in Carlow said they have been targeting known suppliers of drugs over the past months. The apartment had been under surveillance for a number of weeks.
Detectives believe the drugs were destined for the Dublin market. A spokesman would only say they were pleased with the find.
The haul is one of the largest drug seizures in the South-East in recent years.
The seizures follow a massive haul in Dublin last week, when an estimated €20m worth of cannabis resin was seized.
