Charity reports growth in number of women becoming problem gamblers

An event in Dublin moderated by former GAA star Oisin McConville heard that while men who are problem gamblers tend to bet more on sports, women in the same position tend to use casinos and play slot games either on their phone or in person.

There was a surge in people seeking help over a gambling problem last year, with a significant increase in the proportion of women coming forward for support, a charity has said.

In its annual report, the Gambling Awareness Trust said it saw over 2,600 people use its services last year, including 1,600 problem gamblers and 1,000 others affected by someone’s gambling.
