Watch: Eyewitness footage of the dramatic moment a series of explosions rocked Beirut
Shocked onlookers watching out over the centre of the Lebanese capital from a high-rise building as the Friday evening sun started to set suddenly found themselves confronted by the rocket blasts.
The eyewitness who did not want to be named told the : "I counted at least 20 explosions.
"I could barely believe what I was seeing.
"Beirut is now in a very different place now. This is just terrifying."
How many have died has yet to be determined, but the explosions mark yet another escalation in the 12-months-long conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
Israeli jets have bombed the city before, striking at key figures within the paramilitary movement, including a strike that targeted Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqi in the past week.
Other explosions have hit other areas on the outskirts of the city.
