Shocked onlookers watching out over the centre of the Lebanese capital from a high-rise building as the Friday evening sun started to set suddenly found themselves confronted by the rocket blasts.

The eyewitness who did not want to be named told the Irish Examiner: "I counted at least 20 explosions.
