Renault won't be making sport version of Twingo
Speaking at the launch of the lightly warmed-up Twingo GT, Matthieu Metivier, a chief engineer at Renault Sport, said there was “not enough space” in the city car’s engine bay for a larger power unit.
Media speculation regarding a go-faster version of the hatchback has been rife, with the rear-wheel-drive, rear-engined layout seen as the ideal recipe for a hot hatch.
However, it seems that the car’s small engine bay cannot accommodate anything larger than the 0.9-litre, three-cylinder engine that powers the flagship GT model in the Twingo.
“There will be no RS because in the Twingo there is not enough space for a big engine,” Metivier said.
This will come as a blow to fans of fast Renaults, especially after the Clio RS 16 project was ignominiously dropped.
