Motors & Me: Deirdre Waldron - Fiat 500 Vintage '57

What are you currently driving?

A new Fiat 500 Vintage ’57.

Love at first sight, or just a means to get from A to B?

I fell in love with Fiat 500s while on holidays in Italy a few years ago and have been yearning for one ever since. Every time I would see one drive past our office on the South Mall I’d alway say, ‘there goes my car!’ I think that pretty much everyone knew I yearned for a Fiat 500 — so much so that I took a test drive. Once I sat into the car, I couldn’t leave it behind! The Vintage ’57 model has lots of nice little extras and it’s the easiest car to drive and park around the city.

What’s under the bonnet?

Who cares? OK I suppose some people do — it’s a 1.2-litre engine, but really peppy. Even my other half Greg who drives the car every now and again enjoys driving it.

Petrol head or Sunday driver?

Definitely a Sunday driver — or perhaps a Saturday-going-into-town-to-go-shopping-with-my-sis driver!

What was your first car?

A very well-worn white Peugeot 205. Shortly after I bought it, the key broke in the ignition and after that I was able to start the car using my door key or any key. I couldn’t lock the car doors either — surprisingly no one ever tried stealing it.

What else do/did you own?

Before I got my little ‘Bambino’, Greg and I shared a car for 13 years, as we work together and wanted to save money while we were growing the business. We had a series of extremely reliable Hyundai Santa Fes for years which were so handy as we were organising lots of events around the country. About four years ago in the middle of the downturn we traded in our five-year-old Santa Fe for a Jaguar XF. Talk about bucking the trend! We couldn’t believe it when the bank manager gave us the loan.

Dream drive in dream location?

I’m going to have that soon as we are travelling to LA as Greg’s son, Brendan Canty and his company Feel Good Lost are up for two MTV VMAs for the video he produced/directed — Hozier’s ‘Take me to Church’. It will be my first time in LA and we have gotten a great deal on a convertible Ford Mustang. I already have my sunglasses picked out for a dream drive down Rodeo Drive.

Passenger you’d most like on a long journey?

If it wasn’t Greg, it would definitely be my best buddy Ciara O’Toole, the funniest and brightest person I know. We once got lost on the way to Cork together — we were so busy chatting that we forgot to take the right exit and ended up a dirt track and then laughed all the way to Cork, especially due to the fact that she has a pilot’s licence and we still got lost. She is in the middle of writing her second book about her life journey. I get sneak previews about her exploits, from falling in and out of love to her life in Italy.

Passenger you’d least like?

Caitlin Jenner or any of the Kardashians. Although I so admire Caitlin for being brave and living her live the way she wants, I find them so self-obsessed and one dimensional. Anyway I don’t think any of their egos would fit into my little car!

What’s on your playlist?

Van Morrison — ‘Wonderful Remark’; Groove Armada — ‘I See You Baby’; Young Wonder — Sweet Dreaming; and the new Gavin James single — ‘For You’.
