1971 VW Beetle

Love at first sight, or just a means to get from A to B?

After attending a classic vintage show and seeing the variety of VW Beetles on display, it was love at first sight for my wife to be, who choose a VW Beetle as the car to bring her to our wedding ceremony. The next step was to locate a Beetle in need of repair as I wanted to put my own restoration stamp on it and the colour we had chosen. This restoration project took five months to complete and the car was unveiled at our wedding in November 2013.

What’s under the bonnet?

Standard 1.2 litre fully reconditioned engine.

Petrol head or Sunday driver?

I am both a petrol head and Sunday driver. I am in the car body repair business and deal with a variety of cars from modern, classic, to vintage and rally.I am also a member of the local vintage club and regularly attend events at weekends. This gives us an opportunity to do some sightseeing and socialise with others who have the same interest. In the past I have competed in rallies as a navigator in some classic cars such as Escorts and Porsches.

What was your first car?

I bought my first car at the age of 17 — a 1977 Toyota Corolla 20.

What else do/did you own?

I have a keen interest in classic and vintage cars and the collection includes a Ford Prefect, an Austin A35, a Ford Escort and Opel Ascona. The Tractor collection includes a Ferguson 20, a Fordson Major, a Super Dexta and a Ford 2600.

Dream drive in dream location?

Ford Escort RS2000 and tour the sights of Italy.

Passenger you’d most like on a long journey?

My wife, Anne

Passenger you’d least like?

Non car enthusiast

What’s on your playlist?

I like music but the sound of the engine is the best tune.
