THE Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake is a love it or hate it car. It will divide opinion among motoring — even Mercedes — enthusiasts. Some will gush about it and others will think it an aberration.

The original CLS was no less a divider of opinion; it was a surprise from Stuttgart in 2004 and put people into two camps.

The first camp thought it a stunningly original vision of the saloon as a coupe. The second camp thought it to be a gross amalgam of two incompatible endeavours.
