Serial killer Charles Sobhraj has arrived in France after being released from a life sentence in a Nepal prison. Sobhraj, a 78-year-old French citizen, had been serving time for the deaths of American and Canadian backpackers in the 1970s.

His nickname, The Serpent, stems from his reputation as a master of disguise and as an escape artist.

Tom Hiddleston has joined Claire Danes in Apple TV series The Essex Serpent. The Night Manager star, 40, will play Will Ransome in the adaptation of Sarah Perry’s bestselling 2016 novel.
