Afghan police tonight arrested the suspected mastermind behind a "brutal" attack on a UN compound in the country which has killed around 20 people.

A soldier has been charged with the murders of three Afghan civilians, the US Army said today.

The northern Afghan city of Kunduz has been surrendered by the Taliban.
