Latest: Witnesses have reported gunshots and explosions at a hotel and casino complex in the Philippines capital, Manila.

Muslim militants gunned down 16 civilians in the fierce fight for control of the southern Philippines city of Marawi, the army has said.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has declared martial rule in the country's south for 60 days to deal with with an attack by Muslim extremists allied with the Islamic State group who laid siege to a southern city.

At least eight people were killed today in a gunfight between Muslim rebels and Philippine soldiers in the south of the country.
