The computer expert arrested in Pakistan and suspected of being involved in al-Qaida plots to attack London targets was a gifted student who never showed signs of Islamic militancy until after he graduated and left home in 2001, his father and a former professor said today.

Police today moved to block a major protest against the US-led air campaign in Afghanistan by barring the head of Pakistan’s largest Islamic party from travelling and arresting scores of militants.
