The UN Security Council called for the demilitarisation of camps for hundreds of thousands of displaced people in Darfur and unhindered access for aid workers the UN says are facing increasing harassment and violence.

The UN humanitarian chief demanded that Sudanese authorities allow aid agencies into a camp in Darfur and surrounding areas where more than 80,000 displaced people were unable to receive food and other relief supplies for nearly two weeks.

Sudanese government forces have attacked a Darfur refugee camp and killed civilians, according to reports received by the UN.

The United Nations’ humanitarian chief left a Darfur refugee camp in a hurry Monday after demonstrators – calling for UN peacekeepers – attacked a translator, accusing him of supporting the feared Janjaweed militia, a UN spokeswoman said.
