A GIANT drilling machine punched its way through a final section of Alpine rock yesterday to complete the world’s longest tunnel, after 15 years of sometimes lethal construction work.

Swiss citizens today rejected a proposal to scrap the country’s armed forces, cherished by many as vital protection for the small, long-neutral Alpine country in the heart of Europe.
