A man brandishing a gun outside the White House fence was shot by a US Secret Service officer after a 10-minute standoff, officials say.

Two law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the man who today fired shots outside the White House as Robert Pickett, of Evansville, Indiana.
