Syrian troops are crushing pockets of resistance on the outskirts of Damascus as they advance into suburbs previously held by rebel forces, activists said.

At least four people are reported dead as Syrian security forces pounded the city of Hama with tank shells and opened fire on protesters who streamed onto the streets across the country.

Syrian forces killed 24 people on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a human rights group said today.
