WASTE from a pharmaceutical plant, which was intended for incineration, was instead discharged into Cork harbour. The blunder went undetected for over eight months.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been accused of a cover-up after it failed to notify the public of a toxic spillage in Co Cork for nearly three weeks.

An early warning system must be installed to warn the public of environmental accidents, it was urged today.
