A gunman opened fire at a hall of residence and a classroom at a US university today, killing at least 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting in the country's history.

A US university shut down its campus today and ordered everyone to remain inside as authorities searched for an escaped prison inmate suspected of killing a hospital guard and shooting a campus police officer, who later died.
