Samsung Electronics has a new goal after overtaking Apple in smartphones: It wants to be world No 1 in tablet computers too.

Samsung Electronics, the world’s top mobile phone maker, said today that it expects global sales of the latest Galaxy smartphone to pass 10 million in July even as it struggles to keep up with demand because of component shortages.

A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fuelled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer electronics industry, outshining handset rivals such as Nokia Corp.
