US investigators believe a smuggling operation in which 19 illegal immigrants died after being packed into a sweltering trailer with dozens of others is part of a larger organisation.

Seventeen people were found dead when authorities opened up a sweltering, airless trailer that had been abandoned at a south Texas highway service station with more than 100 illegal immigrants locked inside.
