Three nearly simultaneous bombings hit a Egyptian beach resort popular with foreigners yesterday, killing at least 23 people on streets filled with holiday-makers and Egyptians enjoying a long weekend marking a national holiday.

They did not say a word as they barrelled down the deserted, crater-pocked road at 110mph. For eight hours, their lips moved with verses from the Koran, but no sound emerged.
