REBELS took control of a key bridge at Liberia’s capital yesterday in fighting that shattered a day-old ceasefire, sending thousands of families fleeing in a city desperately short of food, water and shelter.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan called for urgent deployment of an international force for Liberia, warning of a “humanitarian tragedy” in a war-ruined capital where fighting this week killed hundreds of trapped civilians.
