Galway needed penalties to beat Mayo in atrocious weather conditions in MacHale Park last Saturday afternoon to qualify for the Connacht Under-20 Championship semi-final next weekend.

Cork’s U20 footballers progressed to the final of the John Kerins Cup as they defeated Galway on Saturday evening.

A brilliant start to the first period of extra-time, which included a goal after 18 seconds, delivered Cork a first All-Ireland minor football title since 2000 and a first underage double in 38 years.

Kerry’s bid for a sixth consecutive All-Ireland minor football title is over as Galway, with a strong final quarter effort, ended the Kingdom’s 34-game unbeaten run at this level.

Galway advanced to the Connacht final with a facile win over Leitrim in Tuam.
