IT is an understatement to say public confidence in the gardaí has been eroded by the report of retired Canadian Supreme Court judge Peter Cory calling for a public inquiry into allegations of garda collusion in the IRA murders of two senior RUC officers in the 1980s.

TWO reports into highly sensitive allegations that rogue elements within the gardaí conspired with the IRA to kill a judge, his wife and two senior RUC officers will be handed to the Taoiseach later today.

The retired Canadian judge investigating suspicions of collusion in six controversial murders during the Troubles has said the Gardaí are fully co-operating with his inquiry.
