A disgraced former detective single-handedly destroyed a small Co Donegal market town by waging a campaign of harassment against a prominent family, it was claimed today.

The Morris Tribunal has heard that questions remain unanswered in relation to the arrest and detention by gardai of Frank McBrearty Jr for an alleged assault on a Co Tyrone man.

The Morris Tribunal, set up to investigate allegations of misconduct by certain members of the Gardaí in Donegal, has this morning heard details of alleged extortion and hoax telephone calls made to the home of a Raphoe family following the death of local cattle dealer Richie Barron.

The Morris Tribunal has heard that an informer facing trial for making false statements to Gardai was asked to do so by his garda handler.
