Troubled bank Halifax Bank of Scotland has agreed to sell its Australian banking business for £1.2bn (€1.54bn) in a bid to boost its balance sheet.

BANK of Scotland (Ireland) has confirmed its assault on the dominance of the two big banks.

Banking group HBOS has unveiled plans to recruit more than 1,500 people over the next three years.
