There was a highly popular winner of the featured Irish Examiner Derby at Ballabuidhe yesterday when local hope Montezuma got up in the shadow on the post for the Castle Racing Syndicate.

The date was Sunday, February 27, 1898, the venue was Cork’s famous suburban lake at The Lough and the top prize was a second-hand bike with golden ball bearings.
