A man has gone on trial charged with attempting to murder his wife on her birthday by hitting her over the head with a hammer while she slept.

A court has heard the 999 call made by a Polish man after he beat his wife with a lump hammer at their Dublin home on the morning of her birthday.

A 39-year-old man is to appear in court this morning charged in connection with a serious assault in west Dublin.
