It will be a tough first day of competition for the five Irish athletes competing at the world indoor championships in Poland today but they all have their personal goals to keep them on track.

France’s Teddy Tamgho today improved his own world record in the triple jump on his way to victory in the European Indoor Championships in Paris.

ON a night that saw Yelena Isinbayeva bounce back from the disaster of the world championships to set a new world record in the pole vault, Ireland’s David Gillick improved on his Berlin placing to finish fourth in the men’s 400m and Derval O’Rourke finished seventh in the 100m hurdles at the Golden League meeting in Zurich.

Yelena Isinbayeva broke the world pole vault record indoors and outdoors, as she easily cleared a height of 4.88m at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham.
