Sales of paints and hardware helped retail sales extend a winning streak even as bar owners posted a drop in sales, official figures show.

British retail sales growth slowed in August at the fastest pace in more than a year as the squeeze on consumers from rising prices continued.

Manufacturers in the UK saw output reach its lowest level in three years this month as companies became increasingly concerned by political and economic problems abroad, a survey said.
