SEVEN prisoners were transferred from Spike Island in County Cork yesterday under the Government’s plan to close the jail by the end of the month.

The Prison Officers' Association says it is "bitterly disappointed" at the decision of Minister McDowell not to open a dialogue with them on the closure of Shanganagh Open Prison.
