THE Regensburg diocese in Pope Benedict’s native Bavaria has confirmed new allegations of child sexual abuse against four priests and two nuns, in the latest cases damaging the Catholic Church’s image in Germany.

The Vatican today denounced what it called aggressive attempts to drag Pope Benedict XVI into the spreading scandals of paedophile priests in his German homeland, and contended he had long confronted abuse cases with courage.
