Parents of pupils at Cork’s North Monastery primary school have vowed to chain themselves to the gates as they insist plans to move the boys into a merger with a nearby convent school will not go ahead.

The proposed merger of two of Cork’s oldest primary schools is causing controversy on the city’s northside.

AT a meeting of the Northside Principals’ Group meeting in Scoil Iosagáin, Farranree recently, 22 principals in Cork city met to discuss the proposed cuts to DEIS schools.

MOST of the country’s primary schools will lie silent for another day or so before nearly half a million children return to classes next week.

EXTRA support for disadvantaged schools is having a positive effect but needs to be ring-fenced from any future cutbacks, a school principal has claimed.
