Skibbereen in Co Cork is to be the focal point of Ireland's first National Famine Memorial Day this May.

One of the country’s best known historical writers is among group of experts who will decide how to honour the million people who died in the Great Famine.

An expert group set up to consider ways to commemorate the Irish Famine will hold its inaugural meeting today.
