County councillors representing north-west Cork have reacted angrily to the redrawing of electoral areas by the Local Electoral Boundary Commission, with a senior council official saying the fall-out from it “will present challenges” to the local authority.

Fears have been raised that recommendations by the Local Electoral Boundary Commission for redrawing municipal district council areas in Co Cork will split communities and remove some from their natural political hinterlands.

The Local Electoral Boundary Commission has recommended the creation of two more municipal district councils in Co Cork and has redrawn a number of them ahead of the expansion of the city boundary.
