US President Barack Obama has used the first official rally of his re-election bid to brand Republican rival Mitt Romney as a willing rubber-stamp for failed policies championed by extreme House Republicans.

The Reverend Jerry Falwell, an outspoken evangelist, apologised yesterday for saying God had allowed terrorists to attack America because of the work of civil liberties groups, abortion rights supporters and feminists.
