The country’s four health insurance providers have been told by the Minister to start slashing costs or else watch their customer numbers collapse.

The Independent Hospitals Association of Ireland has said it is seriously concerned over proposals contained in the Health Amendment Bill to charge patients with private health insurance for use of public beds in public hospitals.

The Irish Health Insurance Council is warning that the government's proposed new public bed charge will lead to an increase of over 30% in health insurance premiums.
