The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 12,000 today for the first time as Wall Street managed to hold on to gains despite concerns about the strength of the US economy.

Wall Street closed its third winning week in a row with another rally today, advancing as a new retail sales report and a consumer confidence reading showed that Americans are growing more confident about the economy.

The FTSE 100 has closed down 62.1 at 5074.2
