The dubious honour of the largest consumer recall in US history — which was once held by Johnson & Johnson’s Tylenol drug — now belongs to the Japanese car-parts supplier, Takata.

A senior Takata executive yesterday defended the Japanese company’s rejection of a nationwide US recall of its potentially deadly airbags, insisting that testing data did not back such an action.
