A string of militant attacks in Afghanistan have killed 12 police officers while six civilians died in bombings, authorities said today.

British troops crawled up a dusty, barren hill in pre-dawn light to launch an attack on a Taliban position that left 16 suspected insurgents and one British Marine dead.

An officer has been thrown out of the New Zealand Army for deliberately shooting a British soldier during a drunken row.
