Online credit card spending in Britain has soared five-fold during the past four years, figures showed.

Credit card companies were urged today to share more information on customers in a bid to stop people racking up unmanageable debt.

Britons withdrew a record £144.1bn (€216.6bn) from cash machines during 2003, the equivalent of £4,570 (€6,870) a second, figures showed today.
