US president Barack Obama and German chancellor Angela Merkel have agreed that international monitors must be sent immediately to southern and eastern Ukraine.

Crimeans have voted overwhelmingly to split away from Ukraine and join Russia, it was announced tonight.

Crimea would be welcome as an equal part of Russia if the region votes to leave Ukraine in an upcoming referendum, the speaker of Russia’s upper house of parliament said today.
