Orange tips are on the wing at present. Male butterflies are unmistakable, with the vivid orange tips of the fore-wings contrasting with the white of the rest of the wings.

The holly blue is a small but striking butterfly — with its wings open in a patch of sunlight it is an intense lilac colour. Females have distinct black tips to the front wings.
