Irish playwright Brian Friel will be laid to rest today in Co. Donegal.

Legendary playwright Brian Friel will be laid to rest on Sunday.

President Michael D Higgins led tributes to his friend, playwright Brian Friel who died yesterday at his home in Greencastle, Co Donegal, at the age of 86.

WE are warned not to speak ill of the dead and we often indulge in polite fictions to avoid conflict. In Brian Friels’s case such evasions are unnecessary, his life and work are very easy to celebrate.

THE writer Brian Friel, who died aged 86 yesterday, did as much as anyone, and far, far more than most, to try to help us untangle our ideas of ourselves and how we are inescapably the children of our past.

In honour of the late Brian Friel we decided to re-visit one of his most famous works, Dancing at Lughnasa.
