Real IRA leader who plotted an explosion during the State visit of Britain’s Prince Charles in 2015 has died in prison.

A dissident republican leader convicted of directing the activities of a terrorist organisation which plotted an explosion during the State visit of Britain’s Prince Charles two years ago has been jailed for eleven and a half years.

Four Irish soldiers who died in the First World War have been honoured today by newly-unveiled plaques during Armistice Day commemorations in Dublin.

One hundred years ago in the poppy fields of Northern France, July 1, 1916, saw the single most hellish day of armed conflict, with the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Dignitaries - including the Arts and Heritage Minister, Dublin's Lord Mayor and the British and American Ambassadors - are attending a Remembrance Day service in the capital this morning.

Today is Armistice Day, which marks the end of the First World War.

In their contribution, Minister Deenihan and Secretary of State Theresa Villiers MP pointed out (Irish Examiner, March 31) that the newly unveiled Cross of Sacrifice in Glasnevin Cemetery was “no better setting for a memorial to remember the tens of thousands of Irishmen who made the ultimate sacrifice during World Wars.”

Irish and British government ministers will today jointly lay the foundation stone of a new monument in Dublin to commemorate soldiers from all over Ireland who lost their lives in the two world wars.
