Fever this August!

The hardest thing about this August Bank Holiday is trying to decide where to spend it. Whether you are looking to kick back at a music festival, savour the arts or pack up the car for a weekend of family fun, Ireland has countless of festivals to choose from.

Festivals for Family Fun

Spraoi, Waterford’s international street arts festival (29th July – 31st July), will transform the streets, squares and quays of Waterford City into a series of outdoor venues for a family weekend full of imagination, colour and fun. Highlights include free street theatre, spectacle, and a dizzying array of music acts.

The town of Scariff in Co. Clare is once again showcasing a weekend of street entertainment, live music, outdoor pursuits, cultural activities and lots more for all the family to enjoy. From the 29th – 31st July the Scariff Harbour Festival will celebrate the beauty of Lough Derg and the stunning Clare coastline. Soak up some music at an outdoor concert, explore the arts and crafts fair, learn something new at the skills workshop and even relax on a boat ride on the Scariff River.

Festivals for Sporting Fans

All roads lead to Killarney this August bank holiday with the world’s leading golfers competing in the Irish Open taking place at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club (28th July – 31st July) and great news for the spectators, as the Killarney Summerfest (23rd July – 31st July) will also be taking place to entertain the crowds. The festival is perfect for families with a mix of children’s activities, outdoor adventure, family evenings and a great line-up of gigs.

In the horse racing world there is few events bigger than the Galway Summer Races (25th July – 31st July). The atmosphere created by a mix of horseracing and fashion is a great recipe for an unforgettable weekend.

Festivals for Music Lovers

Donegal offers the Ballyshannon Folk and Traditional Music Festival, taking place on the 29th – 31st July, which ticks all the boxes for a memorable long weekend. A combination of live street entertainment, open air concerts, music workshops and a great line-up already in place for this year’s showcase. Celebrating its 34th year, the festival once again brings together some of the biggest names in Irish traditional and folk music. More Irish talent will be on display at Le Cheile Arts and Music Festival (29th July – 1st August) in Meath, the programme includes winning performances from names such as Sharon Shannon, Duke Special and Hot House Flowers, who will put on a show to remember in the town of Oldcastle.

Mitchelstown, Co Cork will host the Indiependence Music & Arts Festival (29th – 31st July). The Coronas, Ash and Editors are just a few of the big names that will headline the stage over the weekend. Castleplooza brings the madness to Charleville Castle, Tullamore on 29th July – 1st August. This intimate festival promises to provide mind-blowing memories with the likes of The Danger Is, Jape and Daithi O’Dronai taking to the stage.

Literature Lovers

If writing is your passion then the Hopkins International Literary Festival is perfect for you. Important writers from all over the world will descend upon Newbridge, Co. Kildare from the 23rd – 29th July for a unique opportunity to learn from some of the greatest names in literature. The festival will also include music of the highest quality with performances by Ireland’s leading soprano Celine Byrne. Staying with literature greats, the 50th Yeats International Summer School (24th July – 5th August) will once again take place in Sligo attracting students from around the world. The prestigious school will hold seminars and lectures focusing on specific periods of Yeat’s poetry.
