Former Spice Girls star Victoria Beckham said being a mother is “never about being pushy” and that she and her husband David don’t put any “pressure” on their children.

The comments come months after their eldest son Brooklyn Peltz Beckham took to social media to accuse the couple of controlling narratives in the press about his family and trying to to “ruin” his relationship with his wife Nicola.

In a post shared on Instagram in January, Brooklyn claimed his family values “public promotion and endorsements above all else” adding that “Brand Beckham comes first”.

Appearing on Emma Grede’s Aspire podcast this week, Victoria said that she is “proud” of all of her children, adding: “Being very close is really really important to us and just ultimately we want the kids to be hardworking, kind.

“I’ve always wanted to be the best mum that I could be and look after the kids but I also feel that it’s been part of my job to really help them fulfil their full potential and for them to recognise what their sense of purpose is.

“With Cruz, for example, it was his music. And anything that I could do to support him, to encourage and to help him, that’s my job as his mum.

“It’s never about being pushy or forcing, it’s being there to support.”

Victoria and former England player David, known as Posh and Becks, share four children together: Brooklyn, 27, Romeo, 23, Cruz, 21, and Harper 14.

Their youngest son Cruz has followed in the footsteps of his mother and has pursued a career as the frontman of Cruz Beckham and The Breakers.

Victoria acknowledged that her children have had a “very different upbringing” to her and David, 50, adding: “I think the world is a very different place now, to what it was when they were younger, and we’ve always tried to protect the children as much as we can.”

She explained that the family have “always been really close” and are “quite traditional”.

Asked how the scrutiny she faces has shaped how she is as a mother, Victoria said: “I think that it’s very different parenting adult children to parenting smaller children and you know I’m just trying to do the best that I can, you know, and they grew up so quickly.

“It’s my job to make sure that my kids are the best versions of themselves and that they feel fulfilled. You know I always encourage them to dream big and then dream even bigger.”

The fashion designer added: “The greatest compliment… is when someone will say: ‘I met your kids and they were great kids’.

“We don’t put any pressure on our kids, we just want them to do what they love and to work hard and to be happy.”

Victoria addressed the concept of ‘Brand Beckham’ and said: “When myself and David first met it was never the intention to start a brand. You know people talk about Brand Beckham, and that has happened so organically.”

The mother said that it “was never something that we together ever even discussed”, adding that “we’re a couple of builders that’s what we do”.

It comes after social media posts saw Brooklyn say that he has been “controlled by my parents for most of my life” and did not want to “reconcile” with his family.

Brooklyn has been contacted for comment.
