Cork venue to host evening of discussion and music with participants in Gaza flotilla

Cork people will get a chance to hear first-hand accounts from participants in the flotilla that attempted to break the Israeli blockade on Gaza last year. Campaigner and comedian Tadhg Hickey will host a discussion with fellow flotilla members at Cyprus Avenue on Oliver Plunkett St on Friday, February 13.
The event entitled ‘Shanties and Shenanigans - From The Sumud Flotilla Crew’ will feature a number of participants discussing their experiences around the convoy that was intercepted by Israeli forces in autumn 2025 before they could deliver their cargos of aid to Gaza.

Among those taking part is New York-based singer-songwriter Leila Hegazy, and Claire O'Connor of the 'Mothers against Genocide’ group. As well as the discussion, there will also be some music on the night, with all proceeds going to the Global Sumud Flotilla group to support plans for another aid convoy in the coming months.
Hickey was among 16 Irish people aboard the 40 boats in last year’s flotilla, and was detained by Israel among other participants that included Sinn Féin Senator Chris Andrews, environment activist Greta Thunberg, and Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela. All were deported back to their home countries.
Meanwhile, another Palestine-related benefit event takes place in Cork tonight, Thursday, February 12. ‘No Direction Home’ features local group Fenton & the Phantoms performing the music of Bob Dylan at the Hyde Out on Douglas Street. Proceeds go to the Gaza Go Bragh charity.
