Working Life: Age doesn’t define ability. I have people in their 90s in my classes. They’d surprise you
Lorna O’Regan, nutritionist and wellness coach, Clonakilty, West Cork
“I became a wellness coach by default. I originally studied nutritional science and spent 16 years working as a medical representative. When covid hit, I found myself reassessing things and returning to my roots in nutrition, which led me to train as a wellness coach.
“In the beginning, I visited schools, giving talks and demonstrations, but it naturally evolved in to exercise classes, yoga, and wellness retreats. I quickly realised there was one group being overlooked — older adults. There simply weren’t many options tailored to them. That really struck me during a retreat I ran at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Clonakilty, when two participants couldn’t take part in the yoga. It made me think, ‘Why not create something specifically for this age group?’

“Now, many of my clients are over 60, which feels quite unique. The biggest reward is seeing their confidence grow, their mobility improve, and knowing I’m helping them maintain their independence.
“My classes are full of energy and always set to music — plenty of golden oldies — and there’s a real sense of fun and connection. It’s not just about movement; it’s about enjoyment and social interaction, too.
“One thing I always say is that age doesn’t define ability. I have people in their 90s in my classes, and what they can do would surprise you.
“As founder of Feel Good Health and Fitness, I run a range of classes focused on balance, mobility, and strength — key components in maintaining physical health, preventing falls, and supporting mental wellbeing.
“Regular movement and social connection play a vital role in healthy ageing, supporting not just physical strength and mobility, but also brain health, mood, confidence, and overall quality of life.
“My wellness retreats, tailored specifically for the over-60s, combine exercise, nutrition talks, food demonstrations, guest speakers, and exhibitors — creating a space for genuine connection, learning, and personal growth. “My aim is to redefine fitness for the over-60s, bringing joy, energy, empathy, and a love of golden oldies.
“When I’m not working, I love to swim or run. Swimming, in particular, is my reset — I don’t feel right if movement isn’t part of my day.”
